Doing anything is better than doing nothing

Because I cannot stand to sit here, wishing I could be doing something to help relieve the suffering of so many (tens of thousands of whom are heading to Houston even now), I found http://katrinahelp.info/wiki/index.php/Main_Page, which has a lot of good information in one easy place.

At least it's a place to start, and has phone numbers, web pages, contact info, etc. for many of the groups collecting aid.

This crisis is unimaginable to everyone I know. I can't fathom what it must be like to have literally lost everything - home, possessions, job, school, street, city...where do you go? What do you do?

At least the Wiki page has good information to start with.

I hate feeling helpless to do anything, and having information helps me a lot. I hope it helps some of y'all.
Hi y'all, still no more news on the house..this is getting old I'm tellin ya.

The girls and I are trying to plan a weekend to go to the State Fair in Oct. Rachael is out of class on the 17 & 18 and for some unknown reason our schools here dont get Columbus Day off this year. Nonetheless, that is the weekend we would like to go. Please let us know if y'all are gonna be home ( Dotty, Vicki, Barb), or maybe able to come to Dallas (the rest of y'all).

This is all dependent on my house stuff and whether we have several hundred extra dollars to buy gas with. Let me know :)

Hello Everyone

I hope everyone had a good weekend and I hope everyone has a good Labor day weekend. Jennifer and I are looking forward to a nice weekend at the lake. I have a floting Holiday that I have to take before the first of OCT or I loose the hours. The past couple of weeks I have attended two classes for the Department, Trench Rescue and Confined Space rescue. Both will count for a pay increase in the future!!! I also got to put out my first fire yesterday (8/28) I was only a dumster but it was still my first time to "put the wet stuff on the red stuff". It was sufficiantly cool for the first time. I will have to change shifts in the near future. Our new Station, #5 will open soon, They have to spread out the people they have promoted and make sure they have correct staffing at each station. I also will be in the Paramedic class that will be comming up in January, another reason I have to move they can only have one person from each shift in the class at the same time. Other than that things are going well here in CS, TX.

holy toledo batman

WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME I WOULD HAVE TO WALK SO MUCH?!!! Thanks for the warning! not. I'm partially kidding. Classes are going great. I am enjoying Oklahoma a lot. Its OK!!! hahaha...Most of the people here don't think that's funny, unless they aren't from Oklahoma. My Cultural Geography teacher also teaches the "Geography of Oklahoma." I can't even believe that's a class....but hey, people actually stop for the crosswalk here and you don't have to fear for your life when you attempt to turn left onto 51 because people will STOP AND LET YOU TURN. Texas drivers should take note of this. Its quite useful. No, I haven't been to any crazy parties, the cops here are NUTS! But I'm trying to focus on my school work, becuase over the summer I'm going to establish residency in Oklahoma, so I'll lose my out of state scholarship. I have to keep my GPA up for new scholarships. But I digress...I think I've lost about 5 pounds, and its only the first week. That's pretty neat. Work is boring, but hey, its a job. My other classes are pretty cool. My roommate is really nice, she's pre-vet-med and majoring in Animal Science, so she's a science geek like me. I'm going to this great party this weekend...Megan Luster's. That girl throws the BEST clown parties....so I hear. Julie's gonna let me and Bryan do laundry, give us free food, and a quiet place to do the million hours of homework that we have. Anyway, I have to get ready for work, and drink my "pop" whatever that is....I thought only northerners said that. I miss everybody and I love y'all!!!

love
rachael

well its Friday.....

I know we are supposed to say TGIF but danggggggggggggggg my house is quiet !!! Courtney just left with Cecil for the weekend so I'm all alone.... that could be a good thing huh?

I've decided I want to quit my job. Won't do it of course, but I want to. I'm sick of that place and the people and especially the customers. Good Lord, where do these people come from???? Here's a funny one for y'all.

I get calls for directions to our lab every day. I'ts not hard to find (big IF here) IF you follow my directions, but, granted, the entrance is not well marked. Ok, I get a call asking how to get there and I give the normal speel which is.. After you go under the toll road, go PAST 2 roads on your right then turn in the 2nd driveway. How hard is that I ask you? Really..come on. OK, then I get a call from a guy on his cell. He says, I can't find y'all.blah blah. I say where are you? He said Im on Central Green and I dont see Rankin. Lordy..this is the first of the roads he was supposed to go PAST.. PAST I SAY!!!! Now mind you, Rankin is the road he turned OFF of onto Central Green. Are y'all getting this? Anyway I tell him what to do to get there. So the door opens and I look up and I literally completely cracked up!!! Here is what appears to be 2 18 year old boys..in UNITED STATES COAST GUARD UNIFORMS!!!!!! I literally could not stop laughing. I said..oh my gosh..y'all are the COAST GUARD???? and you cant follow simple directions that only have 1 turn? I sure hope you never have to rescue me !!! They just looked at me...then 1 of em started cracking up. But the other one was very upset with me. I tried to feel bad but I just couldn't. So this poor Coast Guard boy needs his water tested so he can close on his house (they will give anyone a mortgage these days ..sheesh) so eventually he figured out how to fill out the form. It's hard..name, address, phone.. Then his water was contaminated and I had to tell him on the phone. He thought I was kiddin him..poor kid.. Anyway eventually his water passed and he gets to close.

But I guess I should be thankful that he could speak English, which is not all that common among my customers. Im really tired of getting completely blank stares when I say.."you need to write your name right here..yes in English please". Lordy.

Do you think I should get out of the customer service business? maybe 18 1/2 years is just too long. I just don't wanna hear it anymore.

Oh well, life as a public servant..that could a blog all on its own huh?

more later from the 'no I can't test your water for rust, flat worms, or radioactive waste' chronilogs... stay tuned :)

An uncle for

YOUR daughter, tell her not to forget Uncle Buck and the pizza, he will be around for a while....

I'm Related to Michael Stipe

Ok, maybe not, but Laura thinks that she is.

We were watching Sesame Street the other day, and REM was singing with some Muppets. (You can watch the clip online here: http://www.sesameworkshop.org/sesamestreet/tv/stars/article.php?contentId=34500)

Laura looked at me and said, "That's my uncle." I said, "Who?" She pointed at Michael Stipe and said, "That's my uncle." I said, "Uncle Todd? Uncle Jason?" "No, just my uncle." "Why do you think he's your uncle?" "Because I need an uncle, Mommy."

Not as interesting as Karen's story, but a little slice of life with a toddler.

My Wednesday Adventure

I had another "adventure" yesterday. Dad says I have a lot of these weird adventures, and claims I am like Mom in that respect. I'll take his word for it.

It started Tuesday. My car started stinking. Stinking like something had crawled in it and died.

I tore it apart, looking for this dead, decaying, stinking animal, and found nothing.

Wednesday, I almost could not drive to work, the stench was so bad.

Tuesday I was out running errands, with the a/c on and the windows down. Apparently, this does bad things to your gas mileage. Pay attention, this will be important.

Wednesday, it was literally gagging me. I was talking to Jim, that blessed man, when I tried to leave for work. He can attest to my gagging fits every time I tried to get in the car. But I had to go teach, so I armed myself with Oust and Bed Bath and Beyond room spray and went on, windows down, a/c blaring, and finally made it without throwing up.

On the way home, I ran out of gas! I should have had more than enough to get me home...except for the above mentioned lowered gas mileage situation.

So I called Jim and of course, he came to my rescue with a can of gas. I was on the Beltway, very close to the toll booth at 290, in a bad place, but he came anyway, saved me from the evil 18 wheelers, and followed me to the gas station.

He started looking for the smell. Now, this man has almost no sense of smell. It is very strange. He could smell it "a little". I kept retching and feeling like I was going to swoon. Yeah, it really was that bad.

I had already looked everywhere in the car, and couldn't find it. The only clues I had were little tiny pieces of foam rubber that blew out of the a/c vent yesterday when I turned on the car.

I expected that some little rodent had fled the cats by crawling into my car at some point. Sometimes I keep the windows cracked because black cars with black leather interiors get so hot that you don't want to drive them. So yeah - I figured that a mousie had crawled in there and somehow made his way into the a/c vents, but I couldn't imagine how a little mouse could fit in there.

After much flashlight shining, he saw something in the vent. After he asked me to stick my nose right up to it and see if I could smell anything. I saw stars, I tell you. I mean literally. Gak.

Jim tried for a few minutes to get the a/c vent cover off, and when he did, there it was. But no....it was no mousie. It was Mr.RAT.

Now I know that rats exist. And that they live everywhere. But I've never seen one at or near my house, much less a dead, rotting one in my a/c vent. That was just so gross! I cannot overemphasize how gross that was, but then I'm sure you are getting the picture by now.

So, anyway, he took it out, using up all the paper towels at the Texaco station to remove it and start to clean up where it died.

This morning I hit it with the Lysol.

Jim was truly my hero yesterday. It's not everyone who will clean a dead rat out of your a/c vent, after rescuing you on the Beltway with a can of gas.

But you will all be happy to know I didn't take pictures!

Looks Like Old Ken

will be around for a while yet, all of his tests so far have come back as good , better, but no best.
No blood clots or tumors in legs.
No arters blocked in belly, or legs, and no anursuams, and the 4year old repair job is holding and looking good.
Feet and legs are still red and swollen; remedy: keep legs up , cut back on salt, lose weight. Anyone know how to do these simple little things, I can sure use the help. Hee Hee

That is about all, I am sure hopeing they get better so I can bowl this fall, they hurt way too bad to try that now.

Love all of you, ubuck, Gubuck, GGubuck, Dad, Old Pa, Papa

Testing the picture feature

I promised pictures, and here they are.

I took this one some time in the spring, while we were camping. I love winecups - the color is so amazing against the green!

This one is obviously Laura - taken when they were down for Rachael's graduation.
Look at those eyes!

And here are the kitties. The only time they'll sit still long enough for me to get pictures is when they are eating. Very boring, all black and white!

So, for those of you who want to know...uploading pictures is simple, but the layout is weird. It added all the pictures at the top, no matter where the cursor was, and I had to go to the "Edit HTML" tab and move the text around to suit me. Not hard, but fiddly if you aren't used to editing html, etc.

possibly good news

Well since Dad mentioned it..yes i got an offer, but I am trying to hold out for a little bit more, I hope I dont regret it. Some people looked at it last night and they also want to make an offer but their house isnt even on the market yet so..who knows. My new house is started...I sure hope i get to move into it in Nov.

In other news... Courtney has successfully become a junior high kid...horrors!!! She went volleyball tryouts today (they go on for a few days) and had a good day with all her teachers. Im gonna get her on here so she can tell y'all whats goin on with her in her own jr hi speak :)

I'll keep y'all updated on the real estate stuff...I hope I have good news soon..

type people type ;)

Old ken finally

got some help from Karen and now he knows how to "blog" .
I am still having trouble with my feet, been swelling and turning red for a couple of months now, family doctor sent me to heart doctor, we have done echo cardiograhm, regular cardiograhm, doppler radar for veins and artarties of the legs, cat scan of the belly and pelvis, [checking to see in my repair job of 4 yrs ago is holding] and all in all have felt like the devil, the stuff they use in you for the cat scan is terrible, plus drinking lots of the bisthmuth. yuk.

Any way I don't think any of this is life threating but sure would like to find out what is the matter and get it fixed.

Enough bad stuff,-----:
Kim got a fair offer on the house?
Rachael finally got her graduation present from Papa, a 14inch TV with built in VCR, DVD, card reader etc.

Have not talked to Court since school started but probably will tonight.

Love all of you soooooomuch, wish I felt like traveling, would come and see all of you, one at a time, for just a day or two, so I could get to know the Great GREAT KIDS YOU'ALL ARE POPPING OUT , HEE HEE.

Very boring first post

Yeah, I know. I'm slow about posting.

Things are boring here, and I have nothing interesting to say!

I am working part time, teaching ESL to oil field professionals and their families (most of them are from Angola, and speak Portuguese as their primary language. One is from Indonesia, and speaks, oddly enough, Indonesian.) and driving all over creation to their homes/offices is killing me with gas prices so high. But still, it is work, and that is still hard to come by around here, so I cannot complain. The teaching is interesting, the people are very nice and highly motivated, so that helps a lot.

I had thought about setting up a Yahoo group for all of us, at one point, then never really followed through by asking anyone if they would like that. I think this is more fun, and I'm glad Kim had the idea.

I need to take some pictures of my cat family on the patio and post them here, to see how easy the picture uploading is. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow. Can't get more exciting than a half-feral family of cats now, can you? :)

I'm tired, and going to go to bed now. I knew you wanted to know that.
G'night!

So what does BLOG stand for anyway?

Kim this is a good idea even though I don't know what these whole Blog things are about. I have my first holiday(they are floting holidays) form the Fire Department on Friday the 19th. Jennifer and I will be going to the lake to enjoy some time off before school starts. Jennifer is doing fine and working hard on her Thesis, 67-68 pages done so far. I am looking forward to doing more of this bloging stuff. Jennifer said hi to everyone.

Just a Quick Hello

Just thought I'd add my greetings. I think Laura is finally down for the night, so I might be able to get a bit done around here before going to bed. Laura has inherited my sleeplessness. Mom thinks it's funny, but I'm not that amused. Other than that, things are going well. Laura starts back to "school" on Sept. 6 for Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'm looking forward to doing my grocery shopping alone again. Well, I'll stop for now so I can get something done and so Brian can use the computer for "important" things (like reading about airplanes).

It's Getting Hot In Here

Well, I hope no one is totally confused, but this is Michelle, who appears as "Jane" in the list because that is my alias for another blog I have. It is so hot today, I saw a bird pulling a worm out of the ground with oven mits. Ries and I are doing fine. We are on the waiting list for a mastiff puppy from these fine folks. Other that that, no big news. School starts next week and I have my hands full at work. Take care.

Michelle

Hi y'all

I started this blog so that we can all post here and kinda keep up with things. I thought it would be fun because we can post pictures and stuff. I hope everyone will write a little something so I know that y'all are reading it.

Well we just got back from Stillwater this afternoon after getting Rachael all installed in her dorm room at OSU. She's very excited and I have just about stopped crying about it ... dang it was hard leaving her up there.. But Im happy she's there and Julie and Mark have promised to check on her now and then for me.

Courtney starts 7th grade on Wednesday... She's going to be on the same drill team Rachael was (Liberty Babes) and she is in the athletic program. We'll see if she makes any of the teams. Volleyball is first and tryouts start the 2nd day of school so keep your fingers crossed for her. She is also in all pre AP classes except for Language Arts...so she will be a busy girl this year

They have started on my new house, although I havent sold my old one. I'm really hoping to get a contract soon..keep that in your prayers please.

More soon I hope... Dang this house is quiet ...
